At the end of the day, we paid Jeremiah cash out of the register. He left, leaving James and I sitting in the dining room.

“I’m so exhausted,” I said.

“I know those feels.”

I smiled. “We did it.”

“It wasn’t too bad, but I’m still upset with your dad.”

“Yeah, me too,” I said.

“I should have expected it.”

“Nah, you never know with family.”

He put his hand on my arm and looked into my eyes. I smiled, reassured.

“I’m so glad I met you,” I said. “We should get home so we can come back and do this again tomorrow.”

“Hopefully Jeremiah will show back up, and we can find out where his dad and your dad went together.”

“Maybe, but I’m ready to collapse right now. I can’t wait to lay down in my bed.”

“In our bed,” he said with a grin.

I nodded. “Our bed.”

After locking up, we headed to my car.

“At least we have the car,” I said.

“And the apartment. We’re not doing too bad.”

I got in the driver’s side and turned the key in the ignition.

“Buckle up,” I reminded him after he closed his door.

“I’m getting to it.”

“God, we sound like an old married couple.”

“That’s good,” he said.

“I agree.”

I drove out of the parking lot and headed toward our house. Maybe things aren’t so bad after all, I thought.
